Cooperation of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the Republic of Finland

 

General information

Diplomatic relations established on May 13, 1992.

The Embassy of the Republic of Finland in the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened on March 3, 2010.

The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Finland was opened in March, 2012.

Since September 4, 2013, Ambassador of the Republic of Finland in the Republic of Kazakhstan is I.Raisanen.

Since June 11, 2012 Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Finland is G. Koishybayev.

Political relations

Since the day of establishment of diplomatic relations the Kazakhstan-Finnish relations are developing progressively. Positions of two countries on key issues of international policy are close or coincide.

The foundation to political dialogue between the leaders of two countries was laid in September, 1992 when the President of Finland M.Koivisto visited Kazakhstan. In March, 2009 the President of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev's State visit to Finland took place.

In December, 2010 the Finnish delegation headed by the President of Finland T.Halonen took part in OSCE Summit in Astana.

In 2011 the President N.Nazarbayev met the President T.Halonen twice: within the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (June) and on sidelines of UN General Assembly sessions (September).

On March 27, 2012 the meeting of President N.Nazarbayev with the President of Finland S.Niinistö within the Seoul Summit on nuclear safety took place.

On May 21, 2012 the negotiations of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Y.Kazykhanov with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland E.Тuomioja (within NATO Summit in Chicago) took place.

On September 9-13, 2012 the delegation of Committee on defense of Finnish Parliament visited Kazakhstan.

In March, 2013 there were visits of Ministers of Education and Science of B.Zhumagulov, Environmental Protection N.Kapparov and Foreign Affairs E.Idrissov to Finland.

On April 16-18, 2013 the State visit of the President of Finland S.Niinistö to Kazakhstan took place.

On December 5-6, 2013 the negotiations of the Minister E.Idrissov with the Foreign Minister E.Тuomioja took place in the framework OSCE's Foreign Ministers Council in Kiev.

On March 2-6, 2014 the official visit of the speaker of Parliament of the Republic of Finland E.Heinäluoma to Kazakhstan took place.

Trade and economic cooperation

In 2012 the volume of the Kazakhstan-Finnish commodity turnover was 776,4 mln. US dollars (export – 526,6 mln.dollars, import – 249,8 mln.dollars, that is 6,4% less than in 2011).

In 2013 volume reached 916,5 mln. US dollars (including export – 669,2 mln.dollars, import – 247,2 mln.dollars).

In 2014 bilateral commodity turnover reached 1156,1 mln.dollars (including export – 893,6 mln.dollars, import – 262,5 mln.dollars), that is 26,1% more than for the similar period of 2013.

The significant role in development of cooperation between the countries belongs to the Kazakhstan-Finnish Intergovernmental Commission on the trade and economic cooperation, created according to the Agreement on trade and economic cooperation (1992). Currently in total eight meetings of Commission were held (on November 16-19, 1993, October 27-28, 2004, October 27-28, 2005, May 28, 2007, November 3, 2008, February 23, 2011, October 5, 2012 and March 27, 2014).

Cultural and humanitarian relations

Finland's experience on society information, providing one of the world’s highest education levels, preservation of cultural identity and the native language presents considerable interest for Kazakhstan.

To make Kazakhstan's modern art-movie popular, in May, 2010, the Embassy of Kazakhstan held the first festival of the Kazakh cinema, and in December, 2012 "Days of the Kazakhstan cinema" in Finland.

The exchange of experience in the field of science and education is conducting on a constant basis.

During January 31 - February 7, 2012, the Kazakhstan delegation with the representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science and preschool institutions visited Finland to be acquainted with the experience and education system of Finland as a whole.

Cooperation between National archives of Kazakhstan and Finland functions actively.
